The Challenge

I worked with Ryanair for over 2 years, as the Lead UI designer. Ryanair is one of Europes largest low cost airlines. My team was tasked with the job of ‘Re-imagining the future travel experience’ for over 100 Million customers. We grew a team from 1 to 10 Visual Designers in just under a year, redesigning the digital experience across desktop and mobile, as well as a total brand refresh. This work delivered measurable results for the business and provided a clear direction for the company moving forward and placed design at the heart of the organisation.
The Approach
From the start the plan was to revamp everything. From the brand perception through to redesigning, and building out the whole platform. We wanted people to enjoy their experience throughout the whole booking process. Introducing a new brand style, with lighter colours, colourful illustrations, and a more friendly tone of voice, helped change peoples reaction towards booking flights with Ryanair.

The Branding
One thing that we wanted to ensure was that the overall brand style was enjoyable. A lighter, friendly color palette was introduced, with a much more playful icon and illustration style was scattered throughout the product to bring a smile to our users face.

The Ryanair logo is so iconic, it was important that we kept things as consistent as possible.

A more friendly, brighter colour platte was introduced to give the brand style a more modern and more vibrant style.

We felt a new, playful illustration approach would be a key differentiator in the travel sector, so we introduced a bright vector style for our products illustrations, as well as a landmark for every city that Ryanair flew to. In total there was approx 30 landmarks created.

The whole platform was redesigned and rebuilt from the ground up. We started every page from scratch, designing every single page with the customer in mind. Simplicity was key. This project was epic.
